... that 11 teams competed for medals and cash at the Dallas Super Cup 2014?

20 years of Dallas Super Cup

posted Aug 13th, 2014 - Doctor Lee Schlichtemeier opened up the awards ceremony by mentioning that the Dallas Super Cup was 20 years old this year. The competition was started in 1994 to give the local professional team “Dallas Heat” some competition experience. It paid off with Dallas Heat placing 8th in 1994, 6th in 1995 and 4th place in 1996 at the USPA Nationals.

The team disbanded after 1996 and many of the players found themselves on Arizona Airspeed's farm team. Dallas Heat had many professional skydivers pass through its ranks: Alan Metni, Gary Beyer, Perry Knust and Pat Patton, Neal Houston, Christopher Irwin and Kai Wolf.

The competition fell away till the Dallas Thunder Project brought it back in 2005, with Ryan Smith leading the Texas Skydiving League. The event drifted away again until new DZ manager Johnny Kuczaj asked the current meet director Ron Hill to bring it back and increase the drop zone's competition footprint, which included the Dallas Rouge 8-way project in 2009/2010. Ron Hill has been the event's meet director since 2009.

This year, 11 teams showed up. Only two teams registered for the AAA Class competition, which is identical with the Open and Advanced Class dive pool at the USPA Nationals. Dallas 350 (Scott Latinis, Scott Levy, Lucas King, Ron Hill, with Al Levy on camera) placed a full point lower on meet average than the team did last month at the Texas Shootout, as the Super Cup draw was a slower one with three 3-block sequences, compared to only one 3-block sequence at Skydive Spaceland in June.

Dallas Khaos Khobalt, last year's USPA Intermediate Class gold medalists, placed second with a respectable 10.2 average. The other half of the Khaos project “Black” was unable to compete due to scheduling issues with player coach Ari Perelman. Spaceland Lite was also unable to compete with the complete lineup. However, three team members did show up to compete at the Dallas Super Cup bringing player coach teams.

Devon Shows said that they had a great time sweeping the AA Class competition with three Spaceland managed teams: "Spaceland Tsunami won, and our Spaceland Lite player/coach pickup teams Sha'Dynasty and Texas Rox came in 2nd and 3rd. In addition to bringing jumpers with us from Houston to compete, we had people travel from Mississippi, Lousiana, Florida, Austin (and 1 from Dallas) to be on the teams with us."

Meet Director Ron Hill said that Devon Show's team performed well, but was unable to beat Tsunami’s consistency.

A Class pickup teams Hard Stop and Those Guys were guided by Khaos Black member Eric Soden (Those Guys) and Dallas load organizer Brent Bradley (Hard Stop).

Ron Hill said that the Dallas Super Cup seems to always have at least one tie, and the second one last weekend was in the Rookie Class: "Random People and New Kids on the Plane, with Khaos Khobalt Black member Amanda Lampton as player coach, decided to settle the standings by drinking beer and breaking the tie in their own ways..."

Along with medals, the Dallas Super Cup also had prizes, including cash. The Rookie Class winners were awarded not only medals, but each member also received two free jump tickets. The A Class winner pocketed $300 cash, and Spaceland Tsunami took home $500 in the AA Class. AAA Class winner Dallas 350 won $1,000 and donated the money to the drop zone packers Jim Pope and Baby Doll, so they can travel to the USPA Nationals and help support the Dallas teams.
