Did You Know...

... that Chimera won the other tie-breaking options?

Preparations for Round 1: Chimera
posted Aug 30th, 2021 - NSL-TV follows up with the first competition videos of the British Outdoor Nationals 2021, and the audience has the opportunity to look at some of the rounds that were eventually crucial for the outcome of the AAA/Open Class championships.

The meet opener was possibly the most important and unfortunate round for Eros, who fell four points behind NFTO right out of the starting blocks. Eros recovered in Round 2 and followed up with an impressive comeback in Round 3, before losing another three points in Round 4. It was a roller-coaster for the underdog throughout the first five rounds.

Round 4 had a significant impact on NFTO, after a weak performance and additional penalties. The results of Round 4 allowed Chimera to take the lead for the first time. NFTO had their own strong comeback with the fast sequence of Round 7. The NSL News pointed out in the first meet update that Round 7 eventually became most important after the tied jump-off.

Then it was Chimera who digested the 3-point loss in Round 7 very well and won the next two rounds over NFTO for a new tie after Round 9. Eros did the same in Round 7 and Round 8, while it was too late for Joey Jones and his British team to catch up with the two expected top contenders.

Nerve-wrecking: Live judging in Hibaldstow

It was no big surprise that nothing changed between NFTO and Chimera in the last two rounds of their competition. The sequences for Round 9 (22,O,18), Round 10 (13,1,14) and Round 11 (7,12,8) were the slowest ones of the whole competition. It was unlikely that any major or even minor changes would happen at the end of the meet.

It was already surprising that the sequence of Round 9 created three different scoring numbers. However, Rounds 10 and 11 between NFTO and Chimera did not change anything.

Chimera may have feared the fact that a tie after the extra round would put NFTO ahead and in 1st place, due to the highest score of the meet in Round 7 (ii. the highest score in any completed round). The next option in the tie-breaking procedure (iii. the highest score starting with the last completed round and continuing in reverse order, round by round until the tie is broken) would have favored Chimera, who had won Round 9.

In fact, Chimera was actually the stronger of the two teams since Round 8 on the last meet day (Sunday). NFTO scored the 32-pointer in Round 7 at the end of the Saturday action. The last option in the tie-breaking procedure (iv. the fastest time measured to hundredths of a second to the last formation scored without infringement by both teams in the last completed round. Starting time must be that used for original evaluation of the jump) would have created a different winner, as well. Chimera completed the 15th point (top of Block 12) faster than NFTO (31.93 - 33.67) in the jump-off round. The audience may now discuss the tie-breaking rules...

3.2 Objective of the Events
3.2.1 The objective of the event is for the team to complete as many scoring formations as possible within the working time, while correctly following the sequence for the round.
3.2.2 The accumulated total of all rounds completed is used to determine the placing of teams. Only one completed round is required to declare champions.
3.2.2.1 If two or more teams have equal scores the following order of procedures will be applied to determine the final placings:

i. one tie break round, if possible (for the first three placings only). The tie break round will be the next drawn round of the competition,
ii. the highest score in any completed round,
iii. the highest score starting with the last completed round and continuing in reverse order, round by round until the tie is broken,
iv. the fastest time (measured to hundredths of a second) to the last formation scored without infringement by both teams in the last completed round. Starting time must be that used for original evaluation of the jump.
