Did You Know...

... that Andy Grauwels may win his next FAI gold medal as a coach?

No penalties in Tanay: Alban Rumolo (left), Damien Gouriou, David Ricard (right)

posted Oct 24th, 2022 - NFTO fell out of the 2-team lead of totally clean scoresheets on the cold and windy Monday morning at the FAI Outdoor World Meet in Eloy. It was the sequence of Round 6 that ended the streak of five consecutive rounds without any penalties. The 2-point deduction also allowed XPG4 to claim the first sole highscore.

Germany's national team in 4-way Women, Meltemi Oceanside, lasted two more rounds and finally suffered two point deductions in Round 8. There is no team left in Formation Skydiving competition that has not lost any points in the judging room.

It was in 4-way Open at the FAI Tanay Mondial that a team made it through all competition rounds without any penalties. French 4-way Open competitors Damien Gouriou and Alban Rumolo, together with their team mate David Ricard on camera, will probably have good memories of the clean performance in Russia, even though they ended up in 4th place without a medal in 4-way Open. They still won silver in 8-way at the end of their double-duties.

They have two new team mates this year (Tom Mattoni, Mathieu Quizy), and they have lost three points so far. However, they are in a good position to bring back to France a 4-way Open Class medal this year, as they are four points ahead of the Qatar Tigers after Round 8.

Heavily involved in Eloy: Andy Grauwels with NFTO
Andy Grauwels, NMP PCH HayaBusa 4-way world champion of 2014, 2016, 2018, and last year in Russia, did not continue for Belgium's national team after winning his 4th consecutive 4-way gold medal in Tanay. NMP PCH HayaBusa is competing with new Inside Center Neal Willems in Eloy, after Michele Silvi first replaced David Grauwels in the same slot and switched to Outside Center when Andy Grauwels did not continue.

It's the first world meet for Neal Willems, and he is in control of the new HayaBusa lineup, which works well so far. He is on his way to win his first FAI medal faster and earlier than the original HayaBusa members. However, all new HayaBusa members after the first world champions (Roy Janssen, Dennis Praet, David and Andy Grauwels in 2014) won their first world championship title at the next event, Jeroen Nollet in 2016, Michele Silvi in 2021. Neal Willems had much less time to get ready for his first time, and his team mates are very pleased with the current HayaBusa performance.

Andy Grauwels does not compete at Skydive Arizona this year, while he is still heavily involved in the competition. He has been coaching the leader in 4-way Women, and the British national team NFTO is ten points ahead in 1st place after Round 8. Andy Grauwels has a very good chance to win his next FAI gold medal as a coach. The NSL News was following NFTO on their way to Round 8, and coach Andy Grauwels was available for NSL Talk until his team landed from the competition jump.
