Did You Know...

... that the NSL draw includes again the up-to-date graphics with AXIS help?

Tim Wagner in the Omniskore headquarters
posted Jul 29th, 2023 - The weekly competition draw for the NSL 4-way Network has been provided since the National Skydiving League synchronized the events across the participating countries and states in 2004. It was in May 2004 when the first downloadable PDF files were added, and the teams were able to use the print versions of each weekend's draw.

Omniskore's scoring system included the option to create draws in a way that fit to the special format that the National Skydiving League has been using ever since. Only the AAA/Open Class draw is randomly created and then trickles down into the other three NSL categories (AA/A/RRR). The Indoor Cloud League has two additional categories (RR/R) for the beginners in the sport.

This format takes advantage of the fact that AAA/Open sequences could be identical with AA/Intermediate Class sequences, which could be identical with the A Class, and finally some RRR Class sequences could match the A Class rounds. Result of this manipulation of the AAA Class draw is the fact that teams in different categories can at least compare some of their scores with other teams who appear on a different leaderboard on the same meet weekend.

The Omniskore option was not available any longer at the end of the 2007 season, while a new scoring system, Cametrix, offered up-to-date dive pools and printout versions that allowed the same creation of the NSL sequences. By then, the printout versions had become just as much a popular way for teams and coaches to study the graphics of the required competition sequences, as the comparison of scores were across the categories.

Cametrix eventually discontinued their presence in Formation Skydiving competition, while the National Skydiving League was still able to use the system and create the weekly draws the same way. A serious problem occurred though when the dive pool changed, as the NSL News reported on 6 January 2019.

Two new maneuvers and formations for Block and 1 and Block 13 changed the dive pool in 4-way competition. Dive pool changes, necessary and appreciated or not, have been a part of the sport since 1985. The previous operators of the scoring/judging systems (Omniskore, Cametrix) made the necessary adjustments when it was required.

The situation was different at the beginning of 2019. FAI/ISC decided to change the dive pool, and none of the current judging/scoring systems (InTime, Omniskore) offered a similar printout version for the format that the National Skydiving League had been using for 15 years. Cametrix did not update the dive pool of the previous years, and the last printout version of the NSL Cametrix competition draw was posted in January 2019, before the new blocks became 4-way reality at the meets of the coming years.

AXIS Flight School: Brianne Thompson and Niklas Daniel
The NSL competition draw did not include the graphics of the AAA and AA sequences any longer, where Blocks 1 and 13 had changed. However, the same blocks are not in the dive pool for A and RRR Class draws, and the graphics were still available. AAA and AA Class teams had only the numbers and letters of the sequences in their printout versions ever since.

The National Skydiving League received regular requests for the usual graphics and began to look for other options. Finally there was a new solution, and the organizer (SDC Rhythm XP member Keith Conner) and participants of the Midwest Skydiving League's recent July meet could use new and up-to-date graphics of the specific sequences in all categories.

The new solution was provided with the Draw Generator of the AXIS Flight School at Skydive Arizona. Operators Brianne Thompson and Niklas Daniel are both experts in the sport and have their own 4-way careers. Their webmaster Jochen Althoff created the programs that the National Skydiving League is using now.

Brianne Thompson and Niklas Daniel have been in the sport for a long time and have been through dive pool changes, as well. With their help, the National Skydiving League has resumed offering the graphics on any given meet weekend.
